The Least Among You

Mark Kilian

Mark Young’s directorial debut tells the true-life story of an African-American graduate who is sent to an all-white seminary following the 1965 Watts riots.

An impressively textured and compelling score from South African composer Mark Kilian (
Tsotsi) who draws on traces of his homeland’s musical heritage while holding true to the movie’s ‘60s U.S. setting and central themes of prejudice, identity, and destiny — there are beautiful, quiet moments of reflection, mere whispers of chords that seem to stretch to infinity, heartbreaking solitary vocals, as well as African rhythms when the tempo needs a lift, and variations on traditional American blues and gospel.
