In a sign of the changing times, the neighborhood grocery replaces the venerated singles bar in this L.A.-set romantic comedy from director Charlie Loventhal. Elizabeth Berkeley, Missi Pyle, Aisha Tyler, Julian McMahon, and Alan Tudyk anchor the ensemble cast.
The locale may have changed, but David Robbins’ loungy, swinging score leaves no question as to whether today’s supermarket hookups are any less cheesy than their ‘70s era singles bar counterparts. Electric piano and saxophone anchor most of the arrangements, which, in several key instances, veer rhythmically into ‘40s era film noir, suggesting that the battle of the sexes may be just as cat-and-mouse as any gumshoe mystery.
