My Enemy's Enemy

Alex Heffes

Director Kevin Macdonald’s documentary follow-up to his Oscar-winning The Last King of Scotland investigates and exposes the shocking postwar activities of infamous Nazi Gestapo chief Klaus Barbie who worked clandestinely for over forty years helping American intelligence in the fight against communism before his eventual capture in Bolivia in 1987.

Musically stitching together the alternately incredible and bizarre turns of Klaus Barbie’s rebirth as an American Cold War-era intelligence asset, longtime Macdonald collaborator Alex Heffes leans on the absurdist parallels to familiar fictions: ‘60s era spy themes blended with eclectic Eastern European arrangements reminiscent of Anton Karas’ famous The Third Man score, an eerie reminder that even the most creative of narrative intrigues rarely compares with those in real life.
