The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones

Atli Örvarsson

Lily Collins stars for Norwegian director Harald Zwart (Agent Cody Banks, One Night at McCool’s) in this adaptation of the first installment of novelist Cassandra Clare’s popular young adult fantasy series about a New York teenager whose discovery that she belongs to an ancient line of demon hunters is put to the test when she must rescue her mother (Lena Headey) from their alternate realm.

A former Hans Zimmer acolyte, Icelandic composer Atli Örvarsson injects Clare’s aggressively supernatural tale with a vital dose of cinematic seriousness – a nuanced mix of cues that vacillate from undulating industrial mood music to Gothic-tinged orchestral. Tracks like “Mom Sees the Pictures” and “The Portal Revealed / To the Atrium” underscore an uncommonly restrained approach designed to lend credence and credibility to an otherwise incredulous series of events and undertakings. Action interludes erupt accordingly (“Mom Attacked / Apartment Fight with Demon Dog”) while a handful of industrial techno-pop tracks offer up a nod to the story’s YA origins (“Into the Lair”), though the overarching tenor is one of uncommon earnestness expressed through layered yet unostentatious orchestration.
