Nanga Parbat

Gustavo Santaolalla

Joseph Vilsmaier directed this mountain climbing drama about the third ascent of Nanga Parbat, a 26,660 foot mountain in the Himalayas of Pakistan with a deadly reputation for treacherous conditions. The 1970 expedition, which included legendary Alpinist Reinhold Messner, resulted in the controversial death of his younger brother, Günther, who was caught by an avalanche while descending from the peak.

The winner of consecutive Academy Awards for
Brokeback Mountain and Babel, Argentinian composer Gustavo Santaolalla paints a vivid portrait of adventure in one of the most remote parts of the world. The score can be divided into three primary stylistic approaches: the tension and suspense of isolation and abandonment in a frozen wasteland plays out in haunting work for strings and woodwinds, aggressive, rock arrangements capture the life-threatening exhilaration of mountain climbing, while ethereal passages, many on ethnic instruments, provide the perfect sonic accompaniment to the majestic vistas on one of the highest mountains in the world.
