Dumbstruck

Daniel Licht

A hit with critics and audiences following its premiere at the 2010 Palm Springs Film Festival, Mark Goffman’s documentary looks at a year in the lives of five ventriloquists and their “partners.”

Rising to the challenge of providing a common musical context that simultaneously addresses the individual personalities of a diverse group of eccentric talents, composer Daniel Licht – best known for his television work on shows like
Dexter – taps a wide range of jazz-influenced styles, from jazzy-funk to folksy-jazz and samba-incidental, even branching out in several instances to classic blues, ‘60s surf, and Kentucky bluegrass, among others. It’s an eclectic fusion that often evokes such well-known Thomas Newman scores as American Beauty and The Player, yet never strays from the heart and soul of the film’s subjects.
