Lone Survivor

Explosions In The Sky, Steve Jablonsky

Based on former Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell’s bestselling 2007 memoir about the famously failed SEAL Team 10 operation to capture an Afghan Taliban leader in June, 2005, this acclaimed 2013 drama from writer/director Peter Berg stars Mark Wahlberg as Luttrell with supporting performances from Taylor Kitsch, Emile Hirsch, Eric Bana and Ben Foster.

If composer Steve Jablonsky’s thunderous scores for Paramount’s
Transformers franchise etched him a reputation for big-budget genre music, his collaboration with Texas “post-rock” band Explosions in the Sky for the Lone Survivor score does likewise for more high-minded, award-caliber fare. Pensive and soulful, laced with an unapologetic tenor of patriotism and heroism, it’s that rare effort that captures not only the spirit of the film but the heart and soul of its characters. Country-inflected guitar set against a military drumbeat in the title track “Lone Survivor” pays solemn tribute to the men and the mission while tracks like “False Summit,” “A Storm is Coming” and “The Goat Herders” build the suspense that pays off with action-oriented adrenaline tracks like “QRF En Route” and “Letter Received – Taliban Attacks.” The horror and disorientation of war, meanwhile, finds its fullest evocation in the cacophonous experimental tracks “47 Down” and “Axe.”
