Finding Neverland

Jan A.P. Kaczmarek

Johnny Depp stars as “Peter Pan” author J. M. Barrie in director Marc Forster’s (World War Z) heartfelt 2004 biographical drama about Barrie’s relationship with a single mother (Kate Winslet) and her four young sons that inspired his most famous creation.

Arguably his best work to date, Polish-born composer Jan A.P. Kaczmarek’s Oscar-winning score is a florid, buoyant celebration of whimsy and innocence, a soaring work of rich orchestral and choral color tinged with dashes of Baroque and broad swaths of the Romantic. The approach is best characterized in such tracks as “Where is Mr. Barrie” and “Forgotten Overture,” though it is the film’s many imaginative flights of fancy, blurring the lines between reality and fantasy, that give Kaczmarek greater freedom to roam – “Dancing With the Bear,” “The Pirates,” “The Peter Pan Overture” and “This is Neverland” all borrowing from familiar genres and themes and transporting audiences into the imaginations of innocent children – and the man who becomes smitten with them. Also noteworthy are the two vaguely Rachmaninov-inspired “Neverland” piano arrangements; a musical glimpse into Barrie’s conflicted soul – both tender and earnest.
