Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has To Travel

Paul Cantelon

A documentary look at the colorful career and even more colorful life of the legendary Harper’s Bazaar fashion editor courtesy of her granddaughter-in-law, author and filmmaker Lisa Immordino Vreeland.

Conceived originally as a book and later as a film to fill the void of meaningful biographical and career information on the late Diana Vreeland,
The Eye Has to Travel leans heavily on composer Paul Cantelon’s wistful, classically-inspired score to provide both life context and emotional resonance. Seeking to give Vreeland’s rich, colorful narrative a suitably rich and colorful musical treatment, Cantelon’s piano-centric score begins with Diana, a track that would fit almost perfectly among Eric Satie’s Gymnopédies, eventually encompassing a broader range of sources, including the playful extroversion of Parisian dance hall music. Like the woman herself, it’s a score that celebrates convergence and contradiction – elegant, sophisticated, tough and just a little bit mischievous.
