Die Päpstin

Marcel Barsotti

Adapted from the Donna Woolfolk Cross' book of the same name, this Sönke Wortmann-directed 2009 European co-production – the second such film based on the 9th Century legend of the alleged female pope (after the previous 1972 Michael Anderson film starring Liv Ullmann) – stars Johanna Wokalek in the title role and features British actor David Wenham and American actor John Goodman in supporting parts.

Winner of multiple awards in Europe and in the United States, Swiss composer Marcel Barsotti’s score for
Die Päpstin is a powerful orchestral and choral work that unifies a variety of classical musical styles and genres to communicate the vibrant urgency of a legend that continues to fascinate and enthrall, be it as actual history or feminist allegory. Though it most closely evokes the towering scores of ‘60s era Cinemascope epics, Barsotti’s score also incorporates a range of medieval musical styles – folk minstrel and assorted liturgical influences, including Gregorian chant – ultimately yielding a work that is at once vibrant, rapturous and timely.
