Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back

James Venable

A spinoff of writer/director/actor Kevin Smith’s 1994 breakthrough debut Clerks, featuring Smith and Jason Mewes as the eponymous duo first introduced as minor characters in that film, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back finds the troublemakers on a mission to sabotage a film adaptation of a comic which they say is based on them.

Expert at the kind of broad, referential cues and buoyant orchestrations that have made him a darling of comedy filmmakers, particularly regular collaborator Kevin Smith, James L. Venable
(Jersey Girl, Clerks II, The Powerpuff Girls Movie, Deuce Bigelow: European Gigolo) here offers a score that blends playful, original orchestral arrangements with satirical homages to everything from heavy metal to funk, country-western, jazz, liturgical, electronica and a wide range of classic film score references. A freewheeling musical free-for-all, Venable’s score captures the essence of Smith’s frenetic comic book-fueled stream of consciousness – the film music equivalent to a wink and a smile.
