MVP: Most Valuable Primate

Brahm Wenger

Designed to birth a new animal-in-sports franchise along the lines of Air Bud, this 2000 directing debut from Air Bud producer Robert Vince centers on a young chimp named Jack who, after being inadvertently sent to Canada, befriends a deaf girl and becomes a champion hockey player.

Already a seasoned part of the
Air Bud team, Canadian composer Brahm Wenger brings the same sensibilities to the MVP franchise, approaching the material with a combination of earnestness and lightheartedness. The brief but effective cues employ rich and colorful string orchestrations to great effect in incidental bursts when trafficking in pathos (“Climbs in Closet,” “Jack in Class” and “No Longer With Us”) and roaring, rollicking blues/jazz jams when underlining the madcap, crowd-pleasing antics on the ice (songs “Coolest Looking Dude on Ice” and “Whoa, Don’t Go There” along with the instrumentals “Scolding Jack,” Allowed to Play,” “Practice Session,” “The Big Game” and the surf music riff “First Game”).
