Gypsy Girl

Rosino Serrano

Originally screened at the New York Latino Film Festival, this 2003 short film about a young girl who dreams of becoming a flamenco dancer marked the filmmaking debut of Argentine-born co-writer/director Susana Tubert, co-founder and executive director of the Latino International Theater Festival of New York.

A native of Spain who has worked primarily in Mexico, composer Rosino Serrano’s global, cross-cultural influences are on full display in this wonderfully rich yet compact score. Working with a film only 16 minutes in length, Serrano supplies not only the obligatory flamenco music required by the film’s narrative, but vibrant character themes that draw on European Gypsy music as well as a wide range of Latin American folk influences, from Mexico to Brazil to Peru and director Susana Tubert’s native Argentina.
