Go with Peace Jamil

Anders Christensen, Lasse Mosegaard Jensen

Born to a Danish mother and Palestinian father, first-time filmmaker Omar Shargawi’s harrowing festival favorite looks at the choices that beset a young Lebanese father in Copenhagen after he finds himself caught in a blood feud between immigrant Shia and Sunni Muslims.

Befitting the film’s theme, this pulsating, rhythmic score from first-time film composers Anders Christensen and Lasse Mosegaard Jensen adapts the musical sounds and sensibilities of the Arabic street to the world of a modern, urban Copenhagen. Tracks like “El Haiya” evoke a kind of Euro-Arabic hip hop while the softer, more mystical vocal work of “Saut Es Sahra” harks back to the soulful, ancient call of the muezzin. As the film veers toward its climax, the deep internalization of Jamil’s struggle is underscored by a series of lonely, evocative cues that blend both electronic and traditional instrumentation: “The 5th Commandment,” “Tears” and “El Insan.”
