Volker Bertelmann

Adapted from the Ferdinand von Schirach short story, Dorris Dörrie’s acclaimed Berlin Film Festival entry follows the unusual romance that develops between unlikely lovers Irina and Kalle – both living on the streets of modern-day Berlin.

Experimental pianist/composer Volker Bertelmann – typically known by his stage name Hauschka – evokes the irony of love blossoming amid the unseemly crevices of an unkind city, harmony emerging from chaos both musically and narratively. The jazz-inflected score veers from the cold, cacophonous intonations of "Entdeckung," and "Irina Kommt Zürich" to such impassioned, personal themes as "Glück" and "Strassenstrich"; dissonant tempos and aggressively avant-garde instrumentation always just a step behind the liltingly melodic marriage of piano and violin.
