Gangster Squad

Steve Jablonsky

Based on journalist Paul Lieberman’s seven-part history of the LAPD’s elite anti-mob unit of the ‘40s and ‘50s – originally published in the Los Angeles Times in 2008 – this moody modern noir from Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer boasts an irresistible all-star cast: Sean Penn as gangster Mickey Cohen and Josh Brolin and Ryan Gosling as the lawmen determined to take him down. Also along for the ride: Emma Stone, Nick Nolte, Mireille Enos, Anthony Mackie and Giovanni Ribisi.
Despite a more “real world” setting than his iconic
Transformers scores, composer Steve Jablonsky delivers an equally intense jolt of adrenaline here. It’s cops and mobsters stepping in for Transformers and Decepticons, with the fate and tranquility of the city of angels hanging in the balance – hard-boiled strings and rumbling base backed up by gritty horns and drums evoke the rattling rhythms of classic noir, from Franz Waxman and Max Steiner to Jerry Goldsmith. The naked city lurks in the shadows, coming vibrantly, even violently alive in such tracks as “Welcome to Los Angeles,” War for the Soul of L.A.,” “You’re Talking to God,” “Chinatown” and the title track “Gangster Squad.”
