The NeverEnding Story

Klaus Doldinger

Based on Michael Ende’s popular 1979 fantasy novel, this unexpected 1984 followup to 1981’s Oscar-nominated Das Boot from director Wolfgang Petersen weaves together the stories of a young boy named Bastien and the magical adventures that come to life as he reads of them in a mysterious antique book.

Bringing together the talents of German composer Klaus Doldinger (
Das Boot) and American composer Giorgio Moroder (Oscar-winner for Midnight Express), Petersen facilitated a score for his film that proudly boasts the unmistakable signature of each. The buoyantly exhilarating "Atreju’s Flug", the hauntingly mysterious "Im Haulewald" and the thoughtful, reflective "Die Suempfe Der Traurigkeit" all help forge the crucial themes and variations with which the film’s rich tapestry of childhood emotions takes shape.
