Ocean's Twelve

David Holmes

Three years after the 2001 hit remake Ocean’s Eleven, director Steven Soderbergh and cast members George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Julia Roberts and Don Cheadle reunite along with newcomers Catherine Zeta-Jones and French star Vincent Cassell for another brilliantly-conceived heist – this time in Europe.
As identifiable, iconic and indispensible to the franchise as any of the on-screen
Ocean’s cast members is North Irish composer/performer David Holmes’ pumped-up funk-rock-disco-soul-jazz fusion music, arguably the one creative contribution that most effectively sets the tone and informs the attitude of the on-screen hijinks. Off-rhythm baselines, growling guitars and a rip-snorting cavalcade of funky, jazzy riffs groovy enough to peel the vinyl off a pair of go-go boots aren’t just Holmes’ stock in trade – they’re the film’s narrative fuel. The fun starts with “165 Million + Interest,” hits its stride with the conga-and-samba-inflected “Lifting the Building” and the psychedelically-strung-out “What R We Stealing” before bringing it brilliantly home with the irresistible toe-tapping funkfests “Yen on a Carousel” and “Three 8 Bar Drum Loops.” More fun than a casino full of monkeys.
