Today Is Better Than Two Tomorrows

Cyril Morin

One of few films made in Laos, this 2009 debut documentary follows two young boys as they leave their families to become monks in a rapidly changing culture.

Cyril Morin’s score assumes a pensive, meditative attitude. Ethnic flutes set the stage (“Ban nale”), and the world of Buddhism is reflected in the almost funereal chanting in “Houaphan.” Sad, restrained melodies populate the score—from the harp and cello motif in “Khammouan,” to the elegiac “Samsara” (a Buddhist term meaning “continuous flow”) performed by a string and guitar quartet as well as solo piano. The innocent friendship between “Leh and Bo” receives a gorgeous, delicate piano theme.
