Most Valuable Players

Randy Miller

Director Matthew D. Kallis’ 2010 documentary follows three Pennsylvania high school musical troupes as they compete for the ultimate honor, the coveted Freddy Awards – the high school equivalent of Broadway’s Tony Awards.

Striking a delicate balance between the earnest emotion of teenagers with adult-sized dreams and the outsized flamboyance of high school theater, composer Randy Miller gives Kallis’ film a remarkable dual-purpose score. Lavishly orchestrated and skillfully arranged, Miller’s music interpolates an encyclopedic array of showtune motifs – echoes of everything from Lerner & Loewe and Rogers & Hammerstein to Rogers & Hart and Styne & Merrill – yet never betraying so much as a hint of camp or cynicism. Like the kids themselves, it’s all about hope, hard work and an infectiously cheerful disposition.
