Marcello De Francisci

Joseph Sheridan’s notorious 1872 female vampire story “Le Fanu” is the basis for debut directing team Mauricio Chernovetzky and Mark Devendorf’s 2014 horror-thriller about a young girl (Eleanor Tomlinson) whose trip to a Hungarian castle with her father (Stephen Rea) takes a dark twist when she develops a strange friendship with the lone survivor of a horrific car crash (Julia Pietrucha) who may not be what she appears.

Organ and orchestra enmeshed with haunting neo-liturgical vocal arrangements and the eerie use of provincial acoustic instrumentation make for one of the most original and effective modern Gothic scores in recent memory. An award-winning veteran of film, television and video games, composer Marcello De Francisci (
The Butcher) draws on a range of genre influences, capturing a sense of both medieval and modern in a score that evokes the purgatorial uncertainty of supernatural evil imposed on the natural world. Noteworthy tracks include “I’m Taking You Home,” “Crossing the Border,” “The Duty of the Patriarch,” “The Olden Days” and “Blackness Follows Her.”
