20 Nights and A Rainy Day

Cyril Morin

Franco-Vietnamese director Lâm Lê’s 2006 erotic romance frames the cross-cultural history of France and Vietnam in the microcosm of a tempestuous relationship between a young French woman and Vietnamese man.

Among France’s most adept composers at merging cross-cultural musical styles, veteran Cyril Morin mixes classical western and traditional Vietnamese instrumentation with ambient sounds in an assortment of arrangements that bravely shatter the barrier between score and sound design. The soulful, evocative “Romance,” the rhythmic bravado of “Buto” and the impassioned sadness of the string quartet “Deux Mots” paint a portrait of a relationship as deep as a Vietnamese gorge and as rich and colorful as its landscapes. Two richly romantic songs – “Who Was She” and “Song for Shunyata” – add further texture to the effort.
