Rachel Portman

Gwyneth Paltrow commands the title role in Bullets Over Broadway co-writer Douglas McGrath’s 1996 directorial debut, a loving adaptation of the Jane Austen classic centering on a young 19th Century matchmaker whose adept flirtations with flirtation ultimately ensnare her in her very own web of love.

British-born composer Rachel Portman’s
(The Joy Luck Club) history-making Academy Award for Best Original Score – the first ever awarded a female composer – proves the perfect match for Austin’s timeless romantic optimism. Hymnal and pastoral, Portman’s score traffics in modern orchestrations (with occasional period flourishes such as the use of harpsichord in “Mr. Elton’s Rejection”) that nonetheless evoke 19th Century sense and sensibility, never losing sight of the timelessness and contemporary relevance of the story’s themes. Bouncy and festive, tracks like “Harriet’s Portrait” “Sewing and Archery” and “Celery Root” underline Emma’s playful, mischievous side while “Frank Churchill Arrives,” “Emma Dreams of Frank Churchill” and “Proposal” draw out her romantic vulnerabilities.
