Starting Out In The Evening

Adam Gorgoni

Based on Brian Morton’s novel of the same name, this 2007 film, directed by Andrew Wagner, stars Frank Langella in a widely acclaimed turn as an aging novelist who reluctantly agrees to be interviewed by a fawning graduate student (Lauren Ambrose), a decision that forever changes both their lives.

Given the picture’s genteel, almost incidental dramatic qualities, it seems appropriate that composer Adam Gorgoni would draw upon his extensive experience in narrative film, documentary, and episodic television to provide a rich mélange of genteel incidental cues – from soft jazz to orchestral pop and even soft ballad – in capturing the uncertain generation gap between Langella’s aging Leonard Schiller and Abrose’ young and idealistic Heather Wolfe. As the characters struggle to reconcile things contemporary and classical, enduring and fleeting, Gorgoni’s music vacillates between the film’s dueling emotions of sentimentality and apathy, alternately introspective and extroverted as it progressively ebbs with the characters’ conflicted emotions.
