David Robbins

Inspired by first hand experience with Buck Brannaman’s horse whispering abilities when he helped soothe one of her own troubled horses, clothing designer-turned-documentarian Cindy Meehl’s very personal debut film premiered to popular acclaim at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival.

As adept at documentaries as at narrative features (
Casino Jack and the United States of Money, Revenge of the Electric Car), composer David Robbins’ unobtrusive compliment to the remarkable story of a man who overcame a troubled upbringing to become a horse whisperer is predictably heavy on country-western guitar riffs and traditional bluegrass arrangements, though laudably short on effrontery. Conversely, it’s a subdued collection of cues that subtly underline the ebb and flow of Buck’s eventful life and remarkable profession – the levity of “Reata on the Road,” the earnestness of “Traveling,” the almost spiritual gentility of “Whispering,” the breathless innocence of “Young Buck.”
