Salma Hayek stars as legendary Mexican surrealist painter Frida Kahlo in director Julie Taymor’s stylish biography, based on the acclaimed biography by Hayden Herrera. Supporting cast includes Alfred Molina as Kahlo’s husband, Diego Rivera, and Geoffrey Rush as Soviet revolutionary and exile Leon Trotsky.
Winner of the 2002 Academy Award for Best Original Score, composer Elliot Goldenthal’s third nominated effort (after Michael Collins and Interview with the Vampire) is easily among his very best, as much a tribute to Kahlo herself as to regular collaborator Taymor, Goldenthal’s longtime companion. Incorporating a wide variety of traditional Mexican influences, both instrumental and vocal, Goldenthal creates a singular work of rare orchestral color – romantic and passionate, intimate yet epic. Where tracks like “The Journey” evoke the film’s sweeping provincial charms, “Still Life” and the beautiful “The Departure” reveal Kahlo’s painful and guarded private side.
