Adapted from the book The Secret of Piazza Fontana, co-writer and director Marco Tullio Giordana recreates the deadly bombing attack on the National Bank of Agriculture in Milan, in 1969. Simultaneous to this attack, three more bombs explode in Rome, and an additional unexploded device is discovered in Milan. The film traces the various threads of the investigation, the death of anarchist suspect Giuseppe Pinelli during police interrogation, and the reprisal murder a few years later of police commissioner Luigi Calabresi.
Forsaking the traditional compositional approach to police investigative thrillers, award-winning composer Franco Piersanti uses highly situational ambient cues to create an oppressive mood that echoes the tension of the investigation of the shocking attack that killed 17 people and wounded 88 more.
