Marco Beltrami

Guillermo Del Toro’s firstAmerican movie was this nerve-jangling 1997 mutant-bug movie set in the New York subway system.

Given its subterranean locale and insectoid themes, Marco Beltrami’s score is dark, forceful and kinetic, using a full live orchestra and keening choir to convey oncoming dread in muscular and menacing ways, and adding a variety of clicking sounds to evoke insect life. This is driving, insistent unapologetically Gothic music, dark in tone, often violently propulsive (as in the opener "Race to the Subway"), but also open to playful lyricism on a smaller musical scale (as in "Manny’s Tango", using clarinet, accordion, and fiddle).
