The Great Raid

Trevor Rabin

John Dahl’s WWII movie, starring Benjamin Bratt and James Franco, recreates the rescue mission undertaken in early 1945 to rescue 500 American POWs held in brutal conditions in the Philippines by the Japanese.

Ex-Yes member Trevor Rabin structures his score around period, locale and the opposed cultures within the story. The bedrock is traditional martial music, heavy with propulsive percussion, particularly snares and kettledrums, beneath massed strings, somber or soaring, cloaking bright horns that here and there rise up harshly or prettily, according to the varying fortunes of the raiders and the captives, ("The Rescue", "The Great Raid"). Choral overlays with lone trumpet or oboe attend the harsher and more tragic moments ("Execute"), while nighttime stealth episodes near the Japanese camp are enriched with Eastern elements like tick-tocking wooden-block percussion and nerve-jangling, Noh-like plucked single strings ("Stalking").
