The Scientist

Steve Horner

First-time writer/director Zach LeBeau’s award-winning 2010 metaphysical mystery-drama stars Bill Sage as a reclusive scientist who builds an infinite energy machine in his basement, with extraordinary and unforeseen consequences for himself and all around him.

In keeping with the film’s ethereal, otherworldly concept, composer Steve Horner takes a page from the Clint Mansell playbook, employing primarily acoustic instruments in the creation of a meditative, almost ambient score that both sustains and deconstructs the film’s fragile emotional tapestry. Hypnotic string cues like “This Empty House” give way to more experimental efforts like “Twist the Disk,” eventually coming together in tracks like “Redemption” and “Something Wicked.” The use of piano and piano strings to achieve cacophonous dissonance is another common motif throughout, especially in such tracks as “A Flawless Dream” and “Each Breath.” Highlights include the richly florid “She Was Everything” and the closing track “I Am Coming Home.”
