Philip Glass

Writer/director Joshua Michael Stern’s (Swing Vote, Jobs) 2005 debut film stars Aaron Eckhart as a psychiatrist who takes a job at the mental institution where his deceased father (Nick Nolte) wrote a bestselling children’s book while interned as a patient. While there, he builds a relationship with a patient (Ian McKellen) who believes himself a character from that book. William Hurt, Jessica Lange, Vera Farmiga, Alan Cumming and Brittany Murphy round out the all-star cast.

Tasked with musically reinforcing the film’s delicate blend of sweetness and earnestness without overly underlining its darker edges, renowned minimalist composer Philip Glass (“Koyaanisqatsi”) plies his uniquely arpeggiated style here with a heavy string and piano affectation. Lilting and beguiling, it bounces, springs, dances and skips with a carefree glee resolute in its sense of optimism and humanity. Tracks like “First Patient” and “The Riverknight” are designed to send spirits soaring while the sterner stuff of “I Am the King” and “You’re a Reporter” serve as a sobering reminder of life’s oftentimes cruel realities.
